I think Leroy struck pay dirt here and caught them with their pants down 
when they said the smaller format is one stop brighter because it is 
closer to the lens etc. Yee Gods! That is why we have suffered with 
f/stops being weird numbers all these years..by being a focal ratio they 
just counteract the brightness fall off (square of distance law) so that 
all formats with lens marked f/8 give the same exposure to the film.
The tiny 8mm format has a small hole close to film with a 4x5 has a 
larger hole much further from the film, but because of the f/ratio as 
chosen they give identical illumination at the center. (It is possible 
that they mean it is easier to correct lenses for a small format??)BobH
