This is a wonderful idea but how about providing the actual scanned
images as as pairs of images on the CD for free viwing and so that
Liquid Crystal Shutter glass viewing systems can be used to better view
these images in true colour on a computer monitor.
If the original scanned format of the images were made available then
direct printing one image of the pair in b/w or colour as a reference
for students would also be possible.
There are now several cheap systems on the market from StereoGraphics
Corp., 3DTV, Kasan, Chinon and soon VictorMaxx will release the licensed
NuVision glasses at a very attrative price point of $99.00.
IMHO the best system at present is the SimulEyes VR from StereoGraphics
Corp., they can be connected direct to your VGA or SVGA monitor output
on a PC so no add-on cards to install. Perhaps if Synthonics get
together with a producer of LCD glasses to produce a bundled product
then a usefull system could be created that would support both anaglyph
and stereo pair viewing of stills and animations and possibly digitised
movies. Software already exists for the creation and display of stereo
movies and animations using a modified form of the Autodesk .FLI,.FLC
format, Kasan bundle this type of software with their 3D glasses system.
Lets look to the future and try to promote how 3D material can best
be presented using modern methods and equipment that will become more
affordable and available to all through uptake in schools and colleges
etc.
