Realist format - Why I like it (4)

OK, we are back...

The word is around that I prefer Realist slides and that I am rejecting all
other types of 3D. Let me first say that I have experienced most kinds of
stereoscopic imaging and I have personally used a variety of methods to
record images, from classic stereo cameras, to modern SLRs, SEM, and
computers. I have been exposed to many kinds of presentation methods using
a variety of viewers and viewing devices.

Slide film was something new for me when I started in 3-d in 1988. My
first attempts in 3-d were with prints. But I soon settled with the
Realist format (slide film; both chips mounted in one frame) for a variety
of reasons:

1. Standardization.
2. Convenience.
3. Existing hardware of good quality.
4. Flexibility.
5. Realism of slide format.

I'll summarize all of the above in a few sentences: The Realist format is
a standard. One can get cameras, viewers, projectors, mounting materials,
accessories, of good quality. I estimate that 80% of all active stereo
photographers work in the Realist format. Using the classic cameras and
equipment of the 50s that were designed around this format is very
convenient. Commercial mounting is available. The option of using a
viewer or projecting is available. Above all, the realism of a good 3-d
slide viewed in a good 3-d viewer or in projection is something that very
few people can witness and remain indifferent. A good 3-d slide show can
convert any 2-d photographer to 3-d at any time, IMO.

One can argue that the 2x2x2 format offers the same realism and even more
flexibility. I think that, once a person has decide to work in 3-d
exclusively, it is very convenient to carry the stereo pair in one mount.
Also, in the 2x2x2 format one can not find the viewers that are available
for the Realist format, which are plentiful, of high quality and reasonable
priced.

I would like to emphasize the value of the viewing devices once again.
IMO, what counts at the end is how the image is being viewed. We
experience stereo by seeing stereo, and how stereo is presented in our eyes
is extremely important.

To be.... unfortunately ;) .... continued...
