To which I'll add:

It is my view, and hopefully everybody elses by now :-), that the DoF 
numbers are only relative. You need to know YOUR lens's resolution, YOUR 
film/processing resolution, the combined losses in YOUR display 
method, YOUR viewing distance, and YOUR acceptable limits of sharpness, 
in order for YOUR DoF numbers to have any other meaning.
