Many people have asked me about the composition of RBT plastic mounts, which
is Polystyrol P457K Short Name: PS
Jeremy Hinton wrote to me on this neat tip and with his permission IU pass it
on....thanks Jeremy

This may hardly qualify as an entry into your list of tips and pointersas to
how to get the most out of RBT mounts, but you never know what information is
going to come in handy....
I recently obtained 100 used RBT mounts. (Euro size!)
Unfortunately they were written on with indelible spirit-based marker pen...
I tried a number of solvents to clean the markings off without dissolving the
mount. Candidates which did not work were:
Lemon Flash (domestic cleaning fluid) - No Effect.
Petrol (gasoline). - dissolves mark and mount. 8*(
Acetone - dissolves mark and mount.
But:
White Spirit - dissolves mark but not the mount! 8*).
I wonder what any residue does to slide film..?. tests are underway,
although I can't do a real archival - type trial. However, it appears that
so-called permanent inks can be removed from the mounts using White Spirit.
(only one half-mount wrecked in the experiment)
Cheers...Jeremy
Jon responds and asks....
Jeremy.....since you are from the UK....perhaps you could tell us where White
Spirit is made.....I assume that is a household brand in the UK....I have
never heard of it here in the US.....but maybe it is readily avalable
here.....sometime manufacturers change the name of their product a
bit....depending on the country....any comments?
