Re: Camera Obscura

I was in San Francisco back in February and attempted to see the
Camera Obscura behind the cliff house. Unfortunately it was closed.
The guy in the National Parks office nearby said that the owner had
recently died and it was now run by his kids. It was still running but
not quite as regularly.

There is also a camera obscura at the California Museum of Photography
at Riverside (about 1.5 hour drive east of Los Angeles).

I remember first hearing people mention camera obscuras and not knowing
what they were talking about. So for the benefit of those who are still
following this thread and aren't sure what is meant by camera obscura...

It is basically a room sized camera. The room has a lens (a simple pin
hole or an actual glass/plastic lens) and opposite the lens is a white
surface. You walk in the room and view the image projected onto the wall
(or floor, depending upon where the lens is).

There was a good description of the derivation of the term camera
obscura at the CMP but can't remember it well enough to quote it.

Andrew Woods.
