Re: PHOTO-3D digest 1327
RE: hot lenses..Wolfie, John B. et al.
The "hot" Realist derived from the mention that the Ektar may have had
lanthium glass. Leitz had quite a writeup once in Leica Fotographie
telling how some of the new Leica lenses were patented using Lanthium
rare earth element to enhance characteristics and that this was mildly
radio active. BUT they said we made sure to have a high lead content
glass following to 'protect the film'.
I have read of surplus Gunsight eyepieces that were very yellow and had
"uranium glass" and hence were a hazard to view with????
I enjoyed the fine description of the element Polonium i.e. Radium7
posted.
Personally I think the present generation is paranoid over the word
radiation and do not believe half the stuff I read about..e.g. computer
screens, power line emf etc. Most of these are being rapidly disproved.
Same with mercury taken away from us in our camera batteries! My dad was
a dentist and rubbed mercury in his palm for 50 years and died at 92 of
probably diabetes that was a late onset. I used to play with the stuff
as a kid from the 5lb flasks.
Whenever someone freaks out over radiation I think of my RX-5 Cosmo
Mazda built in Hiroshima where no life was to be for 1000 years. BobH
