Series v filters/Scala

Hi

I have spent a month or so tracking down a set of Series V filters for
use on my Kodak. I managed to find K2 (yellow), X1 (green 1), Orange ,
and Red 1 (wratten 25A, probably). Noone had complete pairs of all, but
by finding several sources i could mix and match. Half of mine are
Tiffen, and half are Kodak. The mounting is slightly different, but they
fit fine in the Kodak lensmounts, behind the retaining rings. I even
found a source for Series V polarizers, but they have extra arms that
stick out to locate the axis, so you can't use them on a Kodak.

I have now inspected the results using the green filters on Agfa Scala
direct positive B & W film. I noticed no increase in flare, nor ghost
images on the Kodak. The use of one Tiffen and one Kodak filter didn't
seem to make a difference under a 10x loupe, even though their distance
from the lens surface is slightly different. The lenses of a Kodak are
quite recessed, and the lens mount acts much like a hood. Good thing,
too, 'cause the lenses are flare prone, even though they don't vignette
like my ^*%# Realist (3.5). Even the Kodak manual warns against shooting
toward the sun.

I have sent off a roll shot with the red filters, and am waiting for it
to come back. That will be my third roll of Agfa Scala, one straight,
one with green, and one with red filters, at which time i
will have some words to say in general about my experience with this
film. Not quite the conflagration i was bankin' on (anyone remember
Beyond the Fringe?) but an interesting film, and i will probably persist
with it for a while to see what i can do.

I think that if you advertise on the net, as i did, you can find series V
filters. Unfortunately, most of what you will be offered are warming
filters, conversion filters, and other residua of the flashbulb era. But
i was offered a bunch of skylight filters, and even neutral density, too.
I have even acquired a set of Tiffen proxar close up lenses +1,2,3,6,and
10. Just the 'left side', unfortunately. I am not sure if i will ever
bother doing slide bar close up with a Kodak, when i can use a Nikon and a
55 Micro, but if anyone has done this, i'd like to hear about it.

If you know where Contarex fanciers hang out, you might give them a try,
since that is the only SLR, i am told, which used series V filters. If
you know where Rolleicord wallahs, and Minolta Autocord afficionados lurk,
you can try them too, since the Bayonet 1 filters they use can be
substituted by Series V filters in a bayonet 1 adapter. (i have an
Autocord, and some filters, but only 1 adapter and one series V filter in
it.)

NEW multicoated Series V filters can be ordered by your local superior
retail photography store, from Tiffen, for a mere $29.95 discounted
price. Not very motivating for me, i am afraid. Abbey Camera in Phila
offered to order them for me. Gee--if i had a German 2.8 would i have to
use B & W or Heliopan filters?

My next filter projects are the K2 Yellow, and Orange on Scala with the
Kodak. Has anyone ever seen a Wratten 12 (minus blue) filter in Series V?

Does anyone have a filter adapter/lens-shade pair for the Realist 3.5 they
would like to sell cheap? My new/old 3.5 Ilex seems quite sharp, and
contrasty, and i might like to try some Scala in it, except that the 200
ASA will get me up into f16-22, where the lenses vignette HORRIBLY. Of
course if i put the red filters on, that is 3 stops compensation, just
like using Kodachrome 25........
