Below are the Announcement and Call for Papers for two conferences relevant
to this group:

Stereoscopic Displays and Applications VIII
-------------------------------------------

Part of IS&T/SPIE's 1997 Symposium on Electronic Imaging: Science & Technology
8-14 February 1997, San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, California, USA

Conference    Scott S. Fisher, Telepresence Research, Inc. (USA);
Chairs: John O. Merritt, Interactive Technologies (USA)

Conference    Shojiro Nagata, Japan 3D Forum/InterVision (Japan);
Committee:    Michael A. Weissman, Perspective Systems (USA);
              Andrew J. Woods, Curtin Univ. of Technology (Australia)

This conference will focus on the most recent advances in stereoscopic display
hardware and software technologies, as well as applications that illustrate
the user-interface issues and cost/benefit tradeoffs of stereoscopic 3D
displays. For both real-world and computer-generated applications, there is a
growing need for display techniques that permit the user to perceive objects
in their relative spatial locations and to move through the display space and
manipulate objects easily and accurately. A parallel focus on human
interface research and applications requirements is intended to help guide
future development and evaluation of 3D display technologies. The conference
will permit practitioners and researchers from industry and academia to
exchange current information on stereoscopic 3D display techniques and
applications.

Demonstrations of technologies and applications are *highly* encouraged and
facilities for stereoscopic still and video projection will be provided.
Papers are
solicited for, but are not limited to, the following topics:

* Advances in Stereoscopic 3D Display Technologies
     - methods for recording, playback, and compression of stereoscopic video
     - autostereoscopic displays and "virtual window" displays
     - software issues, requirements, and developments for stereo imaging
     - stereoscopic image sequence coding.

* 3D Image Acquisition/Generation Techniques
     - single- and multilens camera systems
     - motion prallax, volume projection, graphical construction, and other
       stereo image generation techniques.

* Design, Development, and Evaluation of Stereoscopic Displays for
     - teleoperation
     - telepresence
     - telesurgery
     - augmented reality.

* Applications of Stereoscopic 3D Displays in areas such as
     - broadcast TV
     - telerobotics
     - scientific visualization
     - medical imaging
     - industrial inspection
     - communications
     - entertainment
     - training
     - CAD/CAM
     - molecular modeling
     - advertising.

* Cost/Benefit Tradeoffs in Stereoscopic 3D Displays
     - task performance comparisons with non-stereoscopic displays
     - side-benefits of stereoscopic 3D display techniques
     - evaluation methodologies (e.g. depth-acuity measurement).

* User-Interface Issues in Stereoscopic 3D Displays
     - perceptual and cognitive guidelines for stereoscopic 3D displays
     - 3D manipulation and control of viewpoint
     - ortho-stereo, hyper-stereo, and geometry of perceptual space.

The Engineering Reality of Virtual Reality 1997
-----------------------------------------------

Part of IS&T/SPIE's 1997 Symposium on
Electronic Imaging: Science & Technology
8-14 February 1997
San Jose Convention Center
San Jose, California, USA

Conference    Mark T. Bolas, Fakespace, Inc.;
Chairs: Scott S. Fisher, Telepresence Research, Inc.

Conference    Jim Humphries, Hanna/Humphries;
Committee:    Linda Jacobson, Silicon Graphics;
              Henry Sowizral, Sun Microsystems

As virtual and augmented reality systems become more accepted and
accessible, they are evolving to provide utility in addition to
promise. In order to continue this trend, practitioners find that
a number of often disparate technologies and disciplines must be
tailored and integrated for specific visualization and interaction
applications. This conference serves as a forum where advances and
practical advice toward this end can be presented and discussed.
Demonstrations of technologies and applications are *highly*
encouraged and facilities for stereoscopic still and video
projection will be provided.

Papers with a systems and application-specific point of view that
discuss findings or advances in any of the following areas are
solicited:

* graphics generation hardware and software
*       interface devices and paradigms
* display and optics configurations and technologies
*       tracking and sensing technologies
* communications and networking hardware and software
* novel simulation systems and devices
*       ergonomics and human factors.

Work-in-progress papers are especially encouraged.

Abstracts for these conferences are due on July 15, 1997.
