other toys for micro 3D
There's a currently available gadget called a Raynox Model CM-3500 Micro
Explorer. It comes with 3 lenses (marked 6x, 12x, 24x) and a quick mount
adapter that allows instant attachment to lenses with a 52-67mm barrel.
The 6/12/24x values are a little misleading, since they refer to the
enlargement as it would be on a 3x print, and using a 300mm lens! The
actual values are 2x, 4x, and 8x on the film with a 300mm lens. With a
210mm lens, which I use, the actual magnification is 1.25x, 2.5x, and 5x.
This still gets some pretty spectacular results-- you have no problem
photographing Lincoln's earring on a penny! I took some stereo photos of a
chunk of core memory from an old computer by using the Raynox unit, a ring
flash, and an Adorama macro rail (which is occasionally as cheap at $80,
but usually is around $130-- watch their ads in photo magazines). The
Raynox is readily available from several of the budget NYC photo houses.
