Are the image *points* lower in one image than in the other? Is it
possible that the image *chamber* behind each lens is somewhat shifted in
relation to the other?... they are made to move, after all. This would have
frame edges out of alignment relative to each other and the film, but the
images themselves aligned. An aligned cutter would still cut aligned images
correctly.

With the Mark II, you can get misalignment between *both* images and the
cutter due to deformation of sprockets when advancing the film.
If the film resists advancing, usually wound too tight... usually w/36
exp. rolls, the high(low? didn't get an 'A' in physics... or is it
mechanics?) torque on the sprockets can deform them and cause a
less-than-complete advance. Actually, the sprockets can break and lose you a
lot of shots. I load the film and "unspool" it with the rewind knob to
loosen... then I gently take out the slack and pay close attention to whether
it moves properly on advance.
When cutting, you can compensate by jogging the cutter advance knob out
of detent to the amount required.

You have the *old* VM camera? Aren't they all old? :=)
