Jim-
Possibly when concentrating on a single subject within the scene, but
not when asked to do the kind of peripheral visual exploration which
this post went on to describe. The eye movements become quite obvious
and are to my knowledge unconscious.
At least, we never could come close to the kind of fixation you describe
when I was doing this kind of lab stuff as an undergrad all those many,
many years ago...
(Who know, maybe people have evolved since then. 8))
