World O' Filters (SL3D)
hello all
i hope the following will be of use to those in pursuit of SL3d. I have
been questing for filters, and have learn this:
current Wratten 75mm x 75mm 44A is $29. It is a special category of
Wrattens that cost more, like the ND filters. A lot of bucks for some
colored gelatin. I got one anyway (the store told me $13.50 when i special
ordered it....)
So i didn't feel like cutting up an expensive filter right away, and
decided to get a #27 and #95 Roscolux gel, as Paul Kline has described in
his excellent posts (love that glimpse/archive). Of course these are
obscure colors, and my local store doesn't stock 'em. Not only that, but
they informed me that they can't by onesies or twosies from their
distributor, and can't buy direct from Roscolux. They are switching to
Bogen gels, which CAN be ordered on one-off.
So i called Bogen to find out the equivalent filters. Bogen was very
nice on the phone, but had some disturbing news: 1) due to product
liability concerns, they do not list or quote Wratten filter equivalent, and
specifically recommend that "our filters not be used in front of
lenses". Apparently some slime artists try to blame them for the lack of
optical quality when put to inappropriate use. I persisted, and
explained SL3d (as well as i could ;^P ) and the nice man on the phone
went away and looked up his filters, and told me that Bogen doesn't make
an equivalent for the #27 or #95 Roscolux. so don't look for one.
He did give me the name/number of Barbizon-Capitol in Virginia, which is
a place that sells video/broadcast/photo supplies, like filters,
diffusion materials, backgrounds, lighting, lightboxes, etc. I called
them up and they were EXTREMELY helpful and friendly. I explained my
quest etc, and they were willing to waive their usual $25 minimum order.
They sold me a #27 and a #95 Roscolux, 20"x20", for @ $5.50, plus $6.50
(their minimum) S/H, UPS. I mentioned P3D, and asked if they would be
willing to waive the minimum fee for others, and they would be.
Seems to me that 20x20 is about a lifetime supply for fooling around with
P3D, even if i go to 8x10 camera lenses. So i can mess around with
mounting methods and aperature shapes/stops etc, before carving up my
ridiculously expensive Wratten.
Has anyone put an SL3D filter set into a Schneider 210 symmar in a Copal
shutter? W. Carter has described his method for the Ilex shutter, which
we hope will be generally applicable.
regards,
ted
