What's most annoying is that, given the degree of magnification we're
talking about, a speck of dust that's all but invisible to the naked eye
can (for this photographer, anyway) totally *ruin* an otherwise flawless
blue summer sky replete with puffy white cumulus clouds. Boo. Hiss.
Thanks to suggestions from many people on this list, I purchased a
Staticmaster brush (recent digests should include a long, often humorous
discussion, of its magical properties). I also keep a supply of inert
dusting gas on hand. The brush removes the more stubborn particles,
without imparting a static charge which otherwise would just re-attract
them, and the gas blows away the stuff that has settled out of the air.
I apply both just before a critical viewing (and when mounting in glass,
to avoid permanently enshrining aforementioned specks. I'm still not
100% successful, alas).
