converging fields of view

I'm working with a program that creates 3d by moving the camera between two views.
If I move the camera so that it "Stares" at the origin, then the origin seems to be located
at the same depth as the screen; more distant objects are behind it and closer objects are
in front, and the origin corresponds to zero stereo dispatity between the images.
If I move the camera without pivoting, so the stare point is effectively at infinity, then
infinity corresponds to same depth as the screen, and everythign appears to be in front of the
screen.
