Much if not most of the computer "3D" stuff *really* does have it's "images" in
real 3-D, but the display devices are 2D so the programs convert their internal
3D images into 2D because of the display device limitations. Having the
internals be represented in 3D format becoming widespread is *VERY* important
if those of us on this mailing list who use 3D display devices (Red button
viewers, etc) want the mass market computer industry to produce 3-D *display*
devices for us. It's a catch-22. They won't create 3-D display devices (en masse)
until there's material to display with it, and they won't generate material unless
there is something to display it on.
I find the 2-D display versions of "3D" *very* heartwarming because it's necessary
to fuel the catch-22 spiral. 3D still awaits a "killer" application, and while
that's likely to be a game (er, um... or "adult material" it seems), hopefully 3D
(even in 2D display format) can eventually be pervasive enough to drive eventual
3d-display technology in the business world where higher quality might come
about faster.
Those 3D digital cameras talked about occasionally (by me half the time :-) probably
won't come about in a serious manner until there's something to display it on
and software to manipulate it. And vice versa. The software's coming first.
Something needs to, and I'm glad it's happening. I encourage it, I embrace it.
Despite the flattie displays. That's only temporary. We hope. :-)
