Choice of lens for Macro

According to the STEREO WORLD article on Clarence Henning and his
home-made macro, he installed two 35mm lenses over apertures approximately
15mm apart. Now, from this information I assume that the diameter of each
lens was around 12mm (allowing room for the retainer ring on each lens to
but up against one another). My question is if anyone thinks the following
lenses from Edmund Scientific would do the trick:

(from p.34)
Diameter:12mm
Effective focal length:36mm
Coated
Double convex

These are about $17US each. There are high-end lenses for up to
$70US each, but I believe these are not what you'd normally put in a
camera...correct me if I'm wrong...I have never bought raw lens elements
before.

This is the first of probably many questions I'll throw out to the
list. Any comments are greatly appreciated!

                                                  :-)jamie.
