|Many mailing list administrators have adopted an email confirmation
|scheme, whereby when you subscribe you are sent a confirmatory message
|before the subscription actually begins, giving one a chance to evade
|subscription spam. It's been a while since I subscribed, but I don't
|believe this list uses such a procedure, making it vulnerable to such
|tactics.

Actually not *too* vulnerable - as best as I can recall, we've never
been involved in a mega subscription spam (of course, now having said that...).

Generally since each and every subscription has to be confirmed by one of
the 3d-moderators, and since I see EVERY subscription request coming into
bobcat regardless of the list catagory, and since there is an anti-spam
notification network we have been pretty lucky.

If that changes, I might consider switching over to the second level
confirmation software, but I'm reluctant to do that since it creates
fairly severe problems for people wanting to subscribe via a FORMS www
page.

Not having unsubscribe info on messages for those on ACK as opposed to
DIGEST is a problem - I don't want to repeat that on the bottom of
each message in a digest, which is what we would get if I just append
it to the end of every outgoing message. I'm thinking that what I
might do is to put together a PERL program which will periodically
(maybe once a week) scan thru the subscriber data base and send
a short administration message to everyone who is on ACK and POSTPONE
status. Hard to debug from 1100 miles away though :-)

While I've got everyone's ear (er, eyes) I might note that the latest
editon of Stereo World with the article on (Covered) wagon views is a
nice overlap of the lists on bobcat. I'm going to be including some
references to it in an upcoming seminar at the Oregon/California
Trails conference at Elko, Nevada in August since the seminar topic is how
to do historical & genealogical research on the internet.

Thanks!
