Realist Camera Stuff

Well, I just got my new lens cover for my stereo Realist and put
it on. I have to say it's probably the weakest part of the camera.
The two metal clips that hold the cover on can come out if there
is not enough tension (if their too flat). A good jar to the front of
the camera is going to rip the cover off easily. And the cover is
made of plastic which can be broke if hit too hard. It's funny that
the rest of the camera is built like a tank, but the lens cover is
really somewhat fragil. Oh well, I'll see how many I have to buy
in the next year or so. At least they look nice and their cheap ;-)
I must say, though, the cover is a MUST HAVE! But, an aluminum
cover would be much better! Even if it costs twice as much.

Also, I looked at the flash shoe, which is to small for a modern
flash unit (the foot on the flash unit), and simply made a small
modification to to the flash unit (foot). First, I just sanded the flash
foot on the sides and bottom a little. This made it smaller so it would
slide into the Realist flash shoe. Second, I got a moto tool
and dug a small trench down the middle of the bottom of the foot.
This way the big metal ball on the Realist shoe won't get in the way
of the flash foot sliding in. I only dug down the front of the foot to
the electrical pin, NOT BEHIND IT. This way, the plasitc behind the
pin makes a natural stop so that the pin (on the flash foot) and the
metal ball (on the Realist shoe) match up perfectly - making a good
electrical connection. The trench should go around the sides of the
flash foot pin but just not behind it, allowing the ball ample room.
Think of a ,"Y" dug into the plasitc on the bottom of the flash unit
and you have the modification. It works great! And the flash unit
still plugs into my newer camera as well! I just tighten it down a
little more. Don't even think about adapters for the Realist!
Notice this mod doesn't affect the Realist in any way! Never!
I guess most of you know this stuff, but maybe someone out there
doesn't....

My Realist adventures continue........
