Different types?

I'm new to this; I've joined the NSA (two issues so far) and I've
subscribed to this thread. My interest is in older stereoscope images,
especially views of early industry in the west (particularly logging and
logging railroads.) I'm having some difficulty following the various
discussions and articles because I don't understand all the
terms/technologies and the differences between them. Viewmaster,
anaglyph, and lenticular make sense, but I get lost quickly with many of
the other terms. From what I understand, the classic stereoscope is a
heavy cardstock with two photos mounted on it, viewed traditionally with
a metal and wood holder/viewer (of various types.) That said, are there
other types that require different equipment...literally, different
formats? Is there a list of definitions somewhere?

I understand there are some good books that address this, but I've had
no luck connecting with any dealer. Can anyone recommend a good one
that'll actually pick up the phone and take an order? Thanks much!
