This is one of the problems that a 3D movie "revival" would have now. The single
high-school kid who runs 7 movies running simultaneously at the cineplex has
enough trouble keeping the current projectors anywhere near focused, etc. Imagine
the possible problems of running 7 3D films! We'd have to have a pretty foolproof
"new" system. Probably glasses free too -- imagine all the fussing about glasses
which are dirty or missing when all theatres are full. The Cineplex
probably would get sued for missing glasses and the resultant eye injury
(and sadly the suit would probably win big dollars in an out-of-court settlement).

Whether Star Wars actually created new special effects technology or not, it did
use them on a scale not seen in other films to date at it's release (others were
in production simultaneously, but not released "first"). It definitely was NOT
a "plot" film. :-)
