I believe that special effects houses use a whole bag of tricks,
according to the needs of the projects. Much of the existing
animation software is 3D, and could therefore generate stereo fairly
easily. However, some effects are done through digital "painting" of
images, or through custom special-purpose software written
specifically for a particular effect.
