NSA Rochester comments

WOW! The convention was AMAZING!

I room-hopped til 11pm Thursday, again on Friday AM. Went to Friday
PM and Saturday AM slide shows, and the trade show for a couple hours; wish I could've
done more!

Some misc. thoughts:

-I have never seen so much 3D stuff in one place as I saw in Dalia's palatial suite.
I could only stay in there 20 minutes at a time, then had to leave to get oxygen :-)
(to battle the excitement). Man, there was some bizarre & 1-of-a-kind stuff there!
I couldn't believe all the interesting vintage Realist slides for sale cheap- and they
were even organized by subject!

-the SSA Stereocard Exhibit was very nice.

-too bad there weren't 3D movies shown at the convention. I was really hoping to see
them polarized for once in my life, but there isn't a projection booth at this site,
and the projectors are too noisy to be used without a soundproof booth. Who knows when
another convention will be close enough for me go get to anytime soon. Perhaps a
"cone of silence" portable projection booth is needed by the NSA?

-it was GREAT to finally meet some photo-3d members- Joel, Dr. T, Lincoln, Jon, Harry,
etc. Like somebody else mentioned, your mental image of somebody you've "known"
for 4 years was quite different than in person! I wanted to get a 3D picture
of Dr. T in action (with Dremel tool, with a mob of onlookers), but didn't have my flash!
I only wish I had had more time at the convention to actually TALK with
everybody, rather than just introduce myself & run (I had to leave at 1:30 Sat.).

-Never having been to a convention before, I imagined that every 3D related item on
the planet would be available at the trade show, but I was wrong- there was a lot
of stuff I was looking for that I never found... self-timer, 8mm 3 Stooges movie,
vectographs (Dalia was the only place I saw some), etc. etc. Most of the dealers
seemed to be selling views/books/supplies/antique pictures; there weren't a high
percentage of equipment specialists there like Harry P. or Dalia. You wouldn't believe
how hard it was for me to find someone, anyone, with inexpensive projection glasses
(I was looking to buy 5-10 pair); I finally scrounged up a couple pair of old/used
cardboard glasses just to get by (I had bought a very nice projector & wanted to be
able to use it!).

-Jon Golden had an exceptional, ingenious slide display full of great slide views at
the trade show... he took wood & built a box to hold a (fluorescent?) light, then
cut holes all thru one board to hold numerous single-slide $2 white/black plastic viewers
you can get from Reel-3D. There was room for several people to look at once.
He also had a few 1970s Realist aerial hypers of (apparently) Paris for sale; I picked up
a wonderful one where you can see down into huge courtyards of block-sized
building complexes.

-Thanks to Carol Kamin, who cut me the great deal on the nice Tru-Vue viewer & slide rolls,
plus took the time to show me how to use the thing (I'd never seen one before)-
now I have something new to collect (heh, like I need it!).

-I wish there was sufficient interest to form a local Rochester 3D club, but there's
apparently not :-(.

-So how many of you at the convention realized that if you stood directly underneath
the plexiglass chandilier at the bottom of the hotel escalators and took a shot straight
up, that it looks like 3D fireworks?

-So what kind of stereo goodies did the George Eastman House have to show? I had
to report to work Monday, so couldn't go. I've been there before, but heard they
were going to haul some stuff out of storage especially for the NSA tour.

-the slide shows were GREAT! My wife & I were blown away by Simon Bell's
professional multimedia show. I can't conceive why EVERYbody doesn't sell
their products with this kind of show; it was amazing. The huge
number of anamorphic lens shots from the Koehler's made me think that all
the pictures I take will come out that wide (much to my later dissapointment! :-) ).
The nighttime underwater reef macro work of Edward Jameson was incredible. Every
shot was just a wonder to behold. That one short subject (you know which one)
from David Burder was sure, uh, unexpected, by all of us. Burder's bees were
great, and so was the song that went with it. I'm sure David will be pleased
to hear he succeeded in confusing the heck out of the projectionist (the audio
tape said: "the soundtrack is not, repeat NOT, in the correct order with respect
to the slides" (or something to that effect); and we all thought he was kidding!
We were all pretty amused!

-I was amazed at the business of room hopping. A LOT of stuff sold in that period.
Stuff I had looked at Thursday at 8pm was GONE by Friday mid-morning. I'm amazed that
when all the rooms shut down to move to across to the trade show set up area late
Friday, Dalia *still* had enough stuff to stay open!
It indeed gives you a nice relaxed opportunity to look at stuff & talk to people.

I had a good time there, only wish it could've been longer, to really sit
down at a booth for a half hour and look at stereoscope views or ViewMasters, or
look through boxes of miscellenous camera related parts!
