NSA '96 -- The People

Rochester '96 -- The People

It is true that the best part of the convention is meeting old and new
friends... There was plenty of that going on in Rochester... A few new
photo-3d faces for me include Jamie Drouin (I will not forget the spark
of enthusiasm in his eyes), John Edmark (what a great fellow!), Bruce
Rosenberger, Shab Levy, John Roll, Jeff Kogan, Sam Smith, Jim Hollis,
Michael Caplan, Jon Gross, Jeff Jessee... I better stop here, I am sure
I have forgotten a dozen more...

It's interesting how we form a mental image of fellow photo-3ders based
on the sound of their name or style of writing, and how this image
rarely matches the actual person in terms of age, weight or height...
Bruce writes:

"Meeting all of our fellow Photo 3-D members has been the other exciting
event. No one looks like you'd expect! The most depressing thing for me
was to find out that I was one of the oldest (at a mere 40!) Lincoln
Kamm, Jamie Drouin, Dr T., Alex Klein, are all "young guys" clocking in
around mid 20's. Tim Smith, Morris Keesan, George P., Jon Golden are
all, I'm guessing, in their 30's. Joel Alpers appears (and I may be
fooled by the grey hair), along with the Sells, the Millers, all appear
to be "old folks" like me."

I am sure that the Millers are very flattered to be placed in the same
age group with Bruce, Joel Alpers and the Sells... ;) I'd put Joel in
late 30s possibly touching 40. I think those intensive 3-d activities
turned his hair gray earlier in life... ;) ;) ;) Bruce also missed my

age by 1 1/2 decades as I missed his age because he looks much younger
while he "sounds" (?) a bit older in photo-3d ;)... It's good to see
this young blood active in stereo photography...

Who says that stereo photographers do not have humor??? I was fortunate
to sit next to Ron Labbe in the afternoon session of the stereo
projection. Ron and Lee Castro kept us well-entertained with live
commentary on the shows, especially during the weird "3 by David
Burder"... I was laughing hysterically and I was not alone... An older
lady next to Ron confessed that this was her first NSA convention and
that she have not had so much fun for a long time!

I won't forger when Lois Koehler gave Ron to hold for a minute her
Minolta twin SLR rig, fitted with anamorphic lenses for spectacular
widescreen stereo, while she was answering questions from the
audience... With a loud voice: "OK, do I hear $75 for this? I have
$75, do I hear $100?", Ron started auctioning the rig, to Lois' dismay
("I should have known better...")

Sunday morning John Waldsmith was telling us how Fort Wayne wants us
back and convention hotels love us because, unlike other convention
groups, we are quiet people, we do not smoke, we do not drink, we do not
stay up late, we do not steal, we are not loud... "Hey, speak for
yourself!!!" was Ron's quick public response...

Anyway, it was great fun! It was fun seeing Jon Golden, Dalia, Harry
Poster, John Dukes, and dozens more old friends. It was refreshing...
My batteries are now recharged for at least two years, which is fine
because I doubt that I can make it next year to the West Coast... ;(

Thanks guys for an unforgettable NSA '96 convention!
