Color prints were/are much more expensive than slides (four or five times so at least), but I wouldn't say they were "prohibitively" more expensive. I think slides were popular because the projected image is more impressive than a little scrap of paper to hand around, especially in the days before television made large images in our parlors such a common experience. It does seem to me that people used to take pictures more seriously than they do today--it would be interesting to consider whether there is a cause-and-effect (in either direciton) between the more casual attitude toward photos and the supplanting of projection by prints.
