Just to take your response more seriously than you probably intended:

  If the subject's eyes are in the photo then they receive the
same amount of light using my method vs a direct flash. In both
cases, if everything works, enough light strikes the subject's
face and eyes to expose it properly. The difference is that
with my method only about 10% comes directly from the flash
(bounced off the 80-20 device), the rest is from the ceiling.
With the direct flash approach, all 100% of the light comes
from a 2x3" area (the flash head).  Take a guess which will
leave a worse afterimage in the subject's eyes  :)  :)

  For a person in the room who isn't in the photo, my approach
will subject them to more light since the direct flash is
typically very directional and isn't aimed at them.
