Nimslo Opti-Lite flash

Well, the Opti-Lite flash is kind of low-powered, auto only, and is designed
to be used at f/5.6 (wide open on the Nimslo), of course. That probably
wouldn't be your preferred aperture on the Realist, but you could always put
the flash switch in the ASA 400 position and then shoot ASA 100 film at
f/11, which should work all right.
That would still leave you with the problem of connection, since the
Opti-Lite is designed for a modern flash shoe, which the Realist doesn't
have. The Opti-Lite has no provision for a PC cord either, so that would
mean using a modern-hot-shoe-to-PC adapter, plus a PC cord, plus a
PC-to-old-type-hot-shoe adapter. And you'd still need a flash bracket or
something to put the Opti-Lite in. All of which seems like a lot of bother
to go to to adapt such a low-powered flash to the Realist.
I'm using a Vivitar 283 flash with my Revere 33, and I recommend it highly.
You still need the PC-to-old-type-hot-shoe adapter (the Revere has the same
type hot shoe as the Realist) and should use a flash bracket (you can perch
it in the adapter, but that's a somewhat wobbly arrangement), but you then
have a very satisfactory and versatile flash. The Vivitar 283 has been
around for ages, is practically a cult classic, and is quite reasonably
priced ($64.95 from B&H Photo). The adapter is $17.95 from Reel 3-D, and
brackets are available here and there for under $20.
