Question about Kodak Stereo

I usually use a Realist or Twin'ed Nikon Lite-Touch, but this past Saturday
I purchased a Kodak stereo camera. It was in mint condition and I couldn't
pass it up. Unfortunately, I am totally unfamiliar with the Kodak, other
than seeing some good folio work by others.

I have a question. What is the shutter-like post opposite the actual
shutter? In other words, while holding the camera to shoot a photo, the
shutter is on the right side of the top. There is another shutter-like
plunger on the left side of the top. What is it?
