There was a lengthy discussion of the Russian 3D movie system on this list
several months back (quite a few months, maybe--time flies, etc.), possibly
before you joined. It's also discussed in Hayes (3-D Movies) and just about
every detailed article on 3D movies I've read. After all that, however, I'm
afraid I still don't understand the system very well. It involved a screen
filled with slats that apparently acted like a giant lenticular photo on which a
3D movie image could be seen without glasses, albeit from a severely restricted
seating area. A few films were made in the 1940s for the system, notably a
feature based on Robinson Crusoe, and as I understand it, one theater ran for
decades using this small repertoire of films.
