Dave Worrell makes an interesting point: <<Back in my previous lifetime as a

Printed on standard color paper (it was an automated mini-lab after all) with
no color correction I got a nice, but slightly washed out, sepia toned

This explains to me why, several years ago when I sent some B&W film to
Nishika, they told me I could only get sepia-toned prints back, though they
had previously given a choice of blue-ish or sepia. I know very little about
printing negs, but this suggests Nishika was cutting down its processing
capabilities even then!
(Then again, I may be wrong...)
