Evidently R. L. Gregory has understanding problems of his own! It's
precisely the fact that the discoverer had only one eye fully functional
that he was able to observe the phenomenon. His condition allowed him to be
more aware of his visual capacities than most normal two-eye-sighted
persons. By placing a sunglass filter over one eye we are imitating the
visual impairment the discoverer apparently had. The quote doesn't indicate
what degree of blindness existed but my acquaintance with several
individuals who have *legal blindness* in one eye has shown me that such
blindness doesn't always mean *no sight*.
Thank-you to George T. for the informative quote.
