Not to pick nits, but...
The semi-sphere on your (Bob's) light meter is meant to average the light for a stereo (OK by you George?) subject, not to meter a flat light source. The plane that's the back of this semi-sphere should be parallel to your lens board (for those with swings and tilts on their stereo cameras), or film plane. The little flat disc is used to balance the lights at the subject, ie. 2 to 1 etc. The thengie with all the holes in it is used to judge the reflectance values of the subject, or to read an 18% (reflectance) grey card for which your ASA values have been determined.
As a side note, if you're shooting outside without fill, you will usually want to meter at the camera. Face the semi-sphere to mimic the 3-dimentional subject, then hold it in the the sun or shade it appropriately.
