Perhaps...the root is reel as in the dance implying spinning around with applies to both the viewmaster and the film spools. BobH 


I think I am in agreement with Marvin Jones that the mirror device does divide the lens cone into two beams to make stereo pair. (e.g. covering half a lens with not divide the image to a half image, just stop down the lens..unless you are too far away from the front of the lens when it becomes a mask). So since any part of the lens forms a whole image. The device does split it into two images. BobH 

H. C. McKay said the stereo (before 35mm Realist) was killed by the nitpicking of the stereogramists..e.g. the aerial photography type precision mounters, and warned that one should enjoy the system without getting to picky. Perhaps here we are doing the same...I bet it is only engineers and science types that stick with stereo so nitpicking comes naturally? RLH
