Sharp tools, however, are not for dull people!   They'll hurt
themselves!  I know, I can show the scars!   :-)

Words are used to convey what the writer thinks to the reader, whether
the writer is correct or not.

If the writer thinks steam is the condensation coming out of the pot
rather than that which is condensing -- and the reader thinks the
same, then both did something  incorrect which cancelled out
and became correct in terms of language function.

Words are for the transport of ideas -- whether the ideas are correct
or not.

P.S. - To keep this in 3D.... I don't think a beamsplitter splits beams.
       If anything it's the opposite.  It takes two beams (couple inches apart)
       and combines them into one beam (aggregated side by side) at the film plane.
       Its viewer actually splits a beam.  :-)
