Reference to the above.  The simplest method I've used with a reflective 
light meter (i.e. the TTL meter inside my camera) has been 'off the back 
of my hand'!  This was particularly effective on a skiing holiday where, 
otherwise, everyone turns out as silhuettes.

By the way,  the best incident light metering system ever was/is the 
Invercone on the Weston lightmeter:  this is designed so that it can 
even calculate back lighting.
