We used this technique in chemistry class in order to draw what we were 
looking at through a microscope.  One eye looking at the object and the 
other eye looking at the paper.

Now, with a video camera, I've tried to match the view finder image I'm 
looking at with my right eye to the actual scene as viewed through my left 
eye.  Of course the right eye is b&w and the left eye is color.  Still, if 
I _really_ want to see the scene in 3D, I move my right eye away from the 
viewfinder and everything suddenly pops into vivid color stereo :-) :-)
