Re: APS 3D
One of the limitations of the single-lens 3D lenses I have been using is
aperture setting. I'm basically limited to a fixed aperture, or, using
W. Carter's version of C&D-shaped filters, to sacrificing depth as the lens
is stopped down. This would be easily solved using a liquid-crystal
film to create aperture shapes on demand. Probably less battery draw
on automatic cameras too.
In our imaginary APS zoom lens with the switchable prism I mentioned
previously the aperture could be switched from disk to star to emphasize
highlights. Actually any desired shape could be implemented (a profile of
Jimmy Durante comes to mind :-), or you could program your own outline.
Even those fancy doughnut-shaped highlights that are presently
available only with mirror-lenses. Or a pinhole. Or text - imagine
every highlight containing a microscopic message - copyright protection?
"BUY APEX!"?
Could even correct a bit of asigmatism in the lens by varying the
horizontal and vertical scales of the aperture.
Anyway, a liquid-crystal diaphram would allow separate stopping
for the two sides while in stereo mode.
