IMO, the viewer is the weak link in the system.  If "free-hand" means
freeview (view without the use of any device) then I believe that it is
very difficult or almost impossible for the average snapshooter to learn
how to do it.  Here we have dedicated stereo photographers who still cannot
freeview.  If the $5 viewer is one of those cheap ones that you have to
hold with your fingers over the stereo print, then this is also very
difficult for the beginner to use correctly.  The only viewer that will
work is one like the Loreo viewer (or a simiar with improved optics) where
you place your print in a slot (with little freedom of movement) and you
just look through and see 3d.

Don't underestimate the importance of the viewing device.  It could make
the difference between success and failure.  This is an honest opinion. 
Nothing to do with the fact that I have a special bond with viewers ;).
