Greg Wageman asks:
>If most people can't do it, who bought all those books? (random streogram)
That's a very good question. The random stereogram concept was a fad that
has reached it's peak. Did anyone expect that it would last for ever?
Stereo photography is a rewarding hobby that can last for a lifetime.
Freeviewing random stereograms is something that people did for a while and
now they are bored with it. Many people did learn to freeview in the
process. Most of those people were young (personal observation). I know
many more people who got frustrated trying to see those images than people
who were able to make it. One of my most succesful demo slides is a copy
of a RS image which I show to people to see what they are missing all this
time! (It is easily viewed in a viewer as opposed to free-viewing)
I am still not sure why the random stereogram concept reached such
proportions. A good book with computer generated images like the ones
found in "3D Museum" is much more interesting but would never match the
public response shown to random stereograms. Why? Beats me!
Also, don't forget that in the random stereograms you only need to diverge
your eyes a little bit to see the 3D image. Many people who can see RS,
cannot see stereo pairs mounted 50 mm apart. A 3D camera system cannot be
an excercise in frustration. It does need a good viewer! -- George
