I did.  My first experience with stereo was working as an undergraduate in
David Stork's lab, shortly after the invention (or re-discovery, I gather
there was at least one artist who knew about the effect earlier?) of the
single-image stereogram by Chris Tyler.  Stork went him one better &
invented the ortho-single-image stereogram (ortho for orthogonal, sorry
John  :-) ), which contains one 3D image in normal orientation & a
different one when rotated 90 degrees.  They never caught on, however;  I
think there were some pretty sever limitations on what the depth patterns
could be.

Anyways, as part of that job I programmed a SIRD for the inside cover of
the textbook he was working on, "Seeing the Light".  My first published
work!  :-)
