Cameras
I did not realize the ire I raised last week when I suggested that
perhaps Kodak could make a Loreo type "throw-away" to get people into
3-D work.
George (Dr. T) wrote that there was the need for a very good viewer.
I agree but I feel you can sell more better viewers after folks get a
taste of the work. Over the weekend, I figured out a small plastic
unit that could fold into a shirt pocket to be used for looking at
these prints. A better unit would be of metal and have better lenses.
Over the weekend, someone ( and I apoologize for not knowing who)
wondered why I suggested Kodak. It is a BIG company that couls put
out 100,000 units that, if they did not sell, could constitute some
sort of tax write-off for them. Also, with the number of things they
buy, like electronic flashes, they are only paying pennies for the
units whereas you or me would pay several dollars for the same thing.
They also have name recognition, which translates into sales.
Then I saw a listing in a Saturday digest that said 3-D was not for
the masses. Keep it for the elite group who is into the field. Do
this and watch 3-D die of old age. Any field needs "new blood". I,
myself, am new to the field but a young fellow with a new degree in
engineering perhaps could offer some new ideas for others. I still
have to get a camera.
Cost is a factor. What about using the RBT idea and putting two
point and shoot cameras ($100 price range) together?? Then, for a
better model, put two cameras like the Olympus 3500 together having
the two zoom lenses run off of one button as well as both shutters??
That would be in the $800 price range (maybe even $1000). Shutter
speeds and lens openings would be automatic. I would even allow for
two flashes in the camera for good flash coverage.
How many kids are in the various clubs??? How many are into 3-D???
When I was kid, we all had View-Master. We could not afford the
cameras but had fun with the reels. I realize that everyone on this
list has fun with the hobby. My ideas for the camera was to
introduce people who do not know the field to it and then they can go
in whatever direction they want to.
How did I get here?? Last month in Popular Photography, I read the
"how-to" page on 3-D photography and contacted Reel 3-D. Had I not
been a suscriber and read that, I would not be going to the Chicago
Club meeting Wednesday night.
Enough o0f my two cents worth!! I just would like to see more people
into the field. A bigger base would allow companies to do more for
us.
