Supplement: Just got another idea.  I think that I recall Bela
Julesz's book having the programs for generating his random dot
stereograms.  If the programs were FORTRAN, you could probably port
them over to be compiled with any FORTRAN compiler, even on a DOS
machine.  You would just need the compiler.  Then you could do some
of the neat DIRDs which he made, some of which still look great today

But I still like the idea  that one can make these things "by hand"
on an ordinary desktop computer, -- a task which would have taken the
best of Bell Labs back in earlier days.
