True, but don't painters have a distinct advantage over performance
artists when entering a painting contest? Is this unfair?

I'd argue that the contest being entered is "projected slides". Not
the slides themselves. I am assuming that it known that they'll be
projected when judged.

That's a good idea. Not really nit picking. However you also need
to specify what viewer is to be used too. And what bulb. Dr. T's halogen
bulb makes a big difference -- as will the quality of lens (some images
have bigger problems than others with single-element lenses).
Even with projection, it matters how dark the room is (ambient light leaks)
and it matters how bright the projector is. All for similar reasons.
To be really fair, perhaps a light meter could be used to specify
a maximum ambient light level and a blank-slide-off-screen nominal
light level. To gain consistency. Now that's nit picking! :-)

I agree. Knowing the rules of a contest being entered is very important
in all contests. Not just projected stereo slide ones.
In some of the routed "contests by mail", I understand that projection is
even forbidden, and viewers "required".

P.S. - Like with pinball machine "contests", you also need to know how much
tilt you can give the rules, and in which direction(s). :-)
