What to judge

The discussion of slide judging in competitions reminds me of an
oddity at the Oakland Camera Club stereo division. I had always
assumed that computer generated stereo pairs were not allowed
since they are not "photography" but rather graphic art. However,
we were treated one month to a selection of winners from a stereo
club in Los Angeles and these winners included a few that had
computer enhancements, and one that was clearly a computer modeled
image that contained no "real world" photographic elements.
So the next month I entered one of my ray traced images. It took
second place in the general competition of the beta group (we're split
into the experienced and novice groups). There was some mumbling in the
audience, and one "how did you do that?" I was prepared to give up my
coveted second place award, but the image was not questioned, maybe
out of courtesy. The image would be well within the charter of this
group but I don't know if it should have been entered in the OCC.
Another observation I have about club judging is that it seems to
weigh technique over creativity. Then again maybe it won't seem
that way to me when my technique improves!
