It's funny that both Kevin Evans and John Weiler both mention the apparent
reduction of size when freeviewing, because it's a phenomenon I noticed for
the first time just yesterday. Following the discussion here, I got out a
book, "Superstereograms" (which, btw, has some of those neat 'masterpieces'
converted into stereo pairs by computer) and was finally able to accomplish
the crosseyed viewing, and I was amazed by the substantial reduction in size
of the pair I was viewing. I never noticed any size reduction when doing the
wall-eyed freeviewing.
(thanks, Jim Crowell, for later explaining " vergence micropsia"--great
term!)

I've never been able to freeview standard stereoviews... too big, I guess...
but have had no problems doing the divergence thing with stereograms, or
freeviewing the smaller pairs sometimes printed, say, in "Stereo World" and
elsewhere. I like the magnification of a viewer when viewing real photos, but
dislike it when looking at lithos or most photo-mechanical reproductions. I
hate those dots!

best to all
Andy Burr
