Anaglyphs...

Please forgive a response to a digest a few days old, but I am wading
thru several weeks worth...
>And after all this work, expense, and
>fiddle-faddle, you'd wind up with an
>image that is roughly equivalent to an
>Edison cylinder recording compared to a

>is available (as in projection).
A tough quote... Although I agree with the general assertion that
anaglyphs are not suited for projection, I think the example of an
Edison Cylinder vs a DAT tape is a bit off. I produce anaglyphs for
about 50% of what 3D work I churn out, and will be publishing a book
that will be at least 50% anaglyphs in the (hopefully) near future.
[Any of you out there heard me say that before? =)] If a true stereo
pair is used, and the images are processed at maximum resolution with
appropriate software, full resolution anaglyph negatives can be
produced.
I have made 8x10's in b/w anaglyph format that have kept people
starring and saying "wow" for 10 minutes while my Holmes style pairs
generally only heed 10 seconds of viewing or so. Because I can make a
much lager image size in Anaglyph format, more details can be seen in
the 3D image. People DO like this, and it makes it a better option for
me. I would guess that if more people saw high quality Anaglyphs, they
might just feel the same way.
Just like there can be a good or bad stereo slide pair, there can be
good and bad anaglyphs. Unfortunately, there are many more bad
anaglyphs available to the general public than good. I am hoping that
this will change in the future, but constantly deriding the format as
poor, etc. will not help...
Surely some of you out there have seen high quality anaglyphs? Both the
Sell's and I have a link on our "links" pages that go to a site that
has a few images from the Gruber Anatomy images. These images are about
900K (I think...) and sharp as a tack when viewed with anaglyph
glasses. I would rate them very close to DAT tape quality in the
analogy mentioned above. Try them, see if you don't agree...
