Michael and George made some interesting points about Viewmaster Inc, and I
concede that there are benefits to the company's existence today. But I
still stand by the fact using 3D merely as a novelty cash cow does far more
damage than good.
The only advantage I can think of to the existence of Tyco in the 3D
industry is that there's a 3D viewer and 3D concept in every department
store. That has its advantages. But it's a cheap toy, not an accurate
optical instrument, contributing little to serious stereography. The kid's
market has limited them, as it would be hard to take them seriously now if
they did start making a quality product.
Can you imagine what photography would be like if Nikon and Leica ONLY made
plastic 110 cameras? Certainly a cheap 110 camera can be responsible for
sparking one's interest in photography, but if there wasn't any better
cameras on the market to improve your craft with, interest would wane.
There are FAR more and better quality products out there today to promote
and excel interest in 3D. Loreos, Feds, RBTs, View Magic, Franka, LCD
imaging systems, Lenticular cameras, etc etc etc, so why should Tyco stand
alone for praise ? I'd support the underdog any day.
