Differences in Realist images
- From: P3D Harry Poster <hposter@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

>>I've just notice, in my latest batches of slides, a very slight
difference in brightness between the left and right views of my
Realist pairs. The left side seems slightly darker than the right.
This is only apparent if you alternately close one eye and then the
other.
>>I'm using a Realist 3.5, and viewing in a Dr. T-refurbished Kodaslide
II. Is it possible the apertures or shutters on the camera are
slightly out of whack? I doubt this could be a viewer problem, but is
that possible?
>>Thanks.

PD...you can check your eyes, and the viewer at once...just insert the
slide upside down and see if the same, or opposite image appears darker!
First, check the shutter blades...set the camera on "T" and fire the
shutter (to lock the blades open)...then turn the camera on its left, and
then right, end and tap it lightly. If you look through the camera and see
the shutter blades fall into the image area, then the blades have worn and
will need to be replaced. This will affect the amount of light going to each
image.
If the shutter blades look okay, then proceed: The Realist has several
levers within the front of the camera which controls the linkage of shutters
and a band which controls the aperatures. Remove the front (chrome) lens
assembly by carefully unscrewing it, and then adjust the aperature. If the
diaphrams do not look identical, observe how to correct them. Also,
carefully cock and fire the shutter manually, so that you can see if both
shutters start to advance and close at the same time...this, again can be
adjusted.
PS...while you're in there, you can precisely adjust the X-synch of the
Realist. Put the shutter on the maximun shutter speed, hook up your strobe,
and aim at a white wall. When you fire the camera, while looking through the
back of the camera, you'll see ellipses or circles of light. Adjust the
contact at the lower right corner until you see a perfect circle...then it's
adjusted for x-synch at this speed...easy!
