I didn't think of that aspect that you can freeview with one mirror to correct
for the reversed image stereo pair, but the thinking behind using the two
mirrors was that you can view much larger stereo pairs than is possible with
parallel freeviewing.
Regarding using a beamsplitter with a digital camera that would probably 
work. I have done that with my videocamera and Pentax beamsplitter to take
3d pics and video, it would be interesting to use it with CUSEEME, which I
haven't tried. Yes the components are available now, quite affordably as you
mention. The quick Cam is popular with the CUSEEME crowd and one person on
the web has taken 3d b&w pics with it.
