As I see it, NSA conventions have been a magnet for stereo photographers &
collectors because the convention provided a forum in which they could:
1) see slide shows
2) see/buy/sell/trade old and new 3D equipment
3) discuss stereo with others like themselves; get new insights
4) socialize with people who had a similar interest
PSA didn't offer all of the above. Years ago, when I had a "day" job, I
didn't go to PSA conventions when I found out there were no trade fairs and
my understanding was that the Stereo division representation was small. And
I could not take time from work to go to 2 conventions. So I chose NSA,
which offered 3D shows. equipment that I could look, touch and learn about.
I also was [and still am] a collector of a variety of 3D so I looked forward
to adding to my collection.
The only frustrating thing to me about NSA conventions was the abundance of
stereo card collectors. But I had to remind myself that the stereo card
collector was the root from which NSA grew, and I figured NSA could
accomodate all of us. For where else could stereo photographers go to see
an abundance of equipment, supplies and new products. Cameras shows had
some 3D scattered about, but at NSA you could always count on seeing
something of interest and meeting someone with whom you could share your
enthusiasm.
So, the fact that PSA is going to have a trade fair near Chicago (St.
Charles is a tree-lined small town west of Chicago) excites me not only as a
photographer, but as a 3D dealer/publisher. As NSA roots are with stereo
card collectors, PSA roots are in photography. I envision lots of
photographers who don't at present take an interest in stereo, get "hooked"
when they are exposed to equipment and the resultant 3D slides.
PSA is the "natural" place for the stereo photographer due to its long
history with photography and I applaud very loudly its decision to have
trade fairs. And I predict that as the trade fairs grow, so will membership
in PSA.
